Dog Coat for Rainy Days

I have a large, long-haired dog that loves her daily walks. In the past, on wet days, I have chosen not to walk her because of the hassle of drying her off when we enter the house. Now that’s no longer a problem. I have found a great looking, affordable waterproof dog blanket coat.

that covers her entire back and sides. And it’s super easy to secure so it stays put. I am so glad I can take her on her walks every day rain or shine. And  she’s happy too.

Large Dogs Need Warmth, Too

thumbnail-1Most every day we notice cute, small dogs with their owners. More often than not these days, these little dogs are wearing an article of clothing. Dog clothing serves an important purpose this time of year. Our dogs get cold outdoors like we do and need an extra layer of fabric for warmth and comfort when they are out and about. I wouldn’t put a jacket or coat on my large Golden Retriever, but I have found the perfect solution to keep her cozy on our winter walks. It is a blanket dog coat. I put it over her back and fasten it quickly with Velcro ties. In a flash, we’re ready to go outdoors, and I know she’s as comfortable in the cold as I am in my warm jacket.

Warm Dog Clothing for Cold Weather

Just like it’s important for people to bundle up in the winter months, dogs, too, need an extra layer of protection from the elements. Humans don’t have a coat of fur that helps them keep warm in cold weather, but nor do humans ever venture outside without some kind of clothing. We can think of our basic clothing (shirt and pants), like a dog’s fur (with the exclusion of dogs like Huskies and St. Bernards which are bred to survive in cold weather). When venturing outside, if it’s too cold for the owner to just be wearing their regular clothes, it’s probably too cold for the dog to just be walking around without some added protection. Under these circumstances, it’s best to have something like a dog sweater, dog parka, or dog vest. These articles of clothing provide the added warmth needed for dogs to be comfortable in colder weather.

It’s also important to protect the dog’s feet from frostbite with dog boots, which just slip over their toes and can make walking much more comfortable. Most dogs don’t mind walking around in snow without their dog boots, but prolonged exposure without protection can be dangerous.

Walking in the Rain

RaincoatIf your dog is like mine, it doesn’t matter if it’s rain or shine. She just wants her daily walk to see what’s going on out there. She has a long coat, and I have been hesitant about taking her out in the pouring rain because I know I’ll need to dry her off in the house so she doesn’t shake all over my living room. My perfect solution? An adorable raincoat that fits my larger dog. I’m going to get her rainboots, too! Now we can walk every day throughout the winter season, and we’re both happy!

Fleece Dog JacketAs we know, different dog breeds have different coats–some provide more warmth in the winter than others. For those dogs that do not have thick coats, it’ s good idea to invest in getting your pet a winter doggy jacket or sweater. Keep your pet warm, dry, and comfortable during winter outings so your pet will enjoy walking and playing outdoors. I have found a website that offers a great selection at very affordable prices.

Another issue in cold weather is that of your pet’s paws. The pads on your dog’s feet are often overlooked by many pet owners when it comes to pet health problems. Dogs’ pads and toes are susceptible to cold weather damage; snow and ice is frozen water and can cause frost burns and frostbite. Another important winter concern is dealing with the salt used to clear ice from your steps or walkways. Ice removal products, generally either a form of salt or a combination of chemical melting agents, can cause serious burns to your pet’s feet if not washed off with a warm washcloth. A great way to prevent problems is to provide your dog with boots to totally protect his paws. This solution will also save you time in the long run because you won’t have to wash four paws after each snowy outing.

Raincoat SetJust because it’s wet and rainy out there doesn’t mean your pooch won’t want his daily walk. To be on the safe side, protect him from the cold, wet weather with a stylish rain coat and matching hat. It’s also a good idea to keep his paws warm and dry with rain boots. This will also save some puddles on your hardwood floor or carpet.

Dog Gets Ticket out of Baghdad

Ratchet with Gwen BebergRatchet, the Iraqi puppy, finally had his very best day yet. An animal rescue group flew into Baghdad on Sunday, October 19 and loaded him onto a charter flight. He was due to arrive in Minnesota at the end of the week. Ratchet was adopted by Army Spc. Gwen Beberg, 28, from Minnesota. Beberg, along with another soldier, rescued the puppy from a burning pile of trash last May.

It was the third try by Operation Baghdad Pups to get Ratchet out of the country on behalf of Beberg who says she couldn’t have made it through her 13 month deployment without the mutt. “He has been her emotional support, confidante, sanity-saver and a connection with something other than a war zone,” Beberg’s mother reported.

Ratchet would look and feel terrific in a new, soft parka for his first winter in the U.S.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

bev-hills_.jpgMitzi, a pampered Beverly Hills Chihuahua accustomed to riding in a purse, goes for a spa vacation in Mexico with her owner. But when she gets lost, she is forced to find her way back hone with the help of some furry friends.

This movie should be a big hit, especially of Chihuahua owners and lovers. However, animal shelters warn us of hastily going out to purchase one of these cute pets. They can be a handful if the potential owner is unaware of their temperament. So proceed with caution. And enjoy.

Mitzi would love this matching dog ensemble when lunching in Beverly Hills with her friends.

King Cavalier Spaniel PupThis puppy would look great and feel cozy this winter in a beautiful brown winter coat.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a delightfully affectionate, playful, intelligent little dog that repays his owner’s care and attention with an endearing devotion. They make wonderful companions. They are happy, outgoing, loving little dogs who want to love you and be loved, to run and play, and to sleep in a soft bed – preferably yours, but they’re willing to negotiate on that point! They get along well with children, cats, and other dogs. Because young Cavalier puppies are so small (12″ to 13″), some breeders are reluctant to sell a puppy to a family with children under age five. Such families may find that an older puppy or grown dog may be more suitable.

Cavalier puppies do not thrive when left all day alone. They are highly intelligent and require the same consistent and loving discipline as does a child. Because Cavaliers never become “street-wise,” some Cavalier breeders require a fenced yard as a prerequisite ownership.

While Cavaliers are clean, intelligent, and easy to groom and train, they do shed, occasionally chew things, and sometimes forget their manners by barking, making a puddle, and so on. In other words, they really are first and always dogs, in spite of their ethereal faces!
