Practical Dog Hats

I love to see my schnauzer wearing a fashionable dog hat. He draws attention not only from me but from everyone we pass as we’re out and about. Though he’s clearly the talk of the town, I’ve found that his dog hats have practical uses too. For example, I use his sun visor to shield his eyes from harmful UV rays, which can impact dog eyesight just as much as human eyesight. I use his rain hat to keep his head dry and keep water from getting in his eyes when it’s raining outside.

These are just a few of the practical uses I’ve found, and I’m sure there are more. I’d love to hear what other practical uses people have found for their dog hats or dog clothes.

Pampered DogWe love our pets. Americans will spend $43.4 billion on our pets in 2008, a 5 1/2% growth from 2007, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. That’s more than double what pet owners spent more than a decade ago, the group noted.

Contributing to that growth are high-end products and services such as pet spas, day care, and luxury gifts for pets. Another fast-growing area is pet insurance according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. “Pet owners want to protect themselves and their pets against unexpected medical expenses,” says Bob Vetere, president of the association. More than 2 million pet owners currently subscribe to pet insurance. By 2010, APPMA estimates that 5 to 7 % of all pet owners will carry a pet insurance card.

The aging baby boomer population is filling their houses with pets as grown children move out, and this is also contributing to the change in the pet industry, Bob Vetere says. “For empty-nesters, pets are filling a void in their lives, and they’re showing their appreciation to their pets,” he said.

Despite concerns of an economic slowdown as Americans spend more cautiously, the pet industry appears somewhat insulated from recession talk, the association said. “Pet owners and the companies providing pet products and services show no sign of letting up,” Vetere said.

bev-hills_.jpgMitzi, a pampered Beverly Hills Chihuahua accustomed to riding in a purse, goes for a spa vacation in Mexico with her owner. But when she gets lost, she is forced to find her way back hone with the help of some furry friends.

This movie should be a big hit, especially of Chihuahua owners and lovers. However, animal shelters warn us of hastily going out to purchase one of these cute pets. They can be a handful if the potential owner is unaware of their temperament. So proceed with caution. And enjoy.

Mitzi would love this matching dog ensemble when lunching in Beverly Hills with her friends.

Dog Clothing Isn’t Just Cute

opera.jpg Dog clothing serves many purposes other than just making a dog appear stylish. Warmth is the number one reason for dog outerwear, which provides the insulation he or she needs outdoors or even in a drafty house.

Dog clothing can keep dogs with allergies from scratching, chewing, and licking their itchy skin as well as keeping allergies off the dog’s skin in the first place. Dog clothing also protects people that may be allergic to the dog by decreasing the amount of dander in the air.

Lady in Red

dog hatsWe’ve all heard of The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss’ most popular book. In fact, The Cat in the Hat is such a well-known, trans- generational icon that I don’t think I know anyone who hasn’t heard of it! Kids of all ages are big fans, but now I have my own little dog in a hat. This Lady in Red dog outfit is perfect for my little dog. She’s a real ham and loves all the attention!

I looked at more of your dog hats and I was really impressed with what I saw. In my experience everything you have is pretty high quality but the prices, wow. It’s not even twenty bucks for this ultra-swank hat for my dog. The range of sizes is great too, since I also have a larger dog - I can even dress them to match!

Things to Consider:

  1. Take your time and pick the right dog.
  2. It’s not recommended that you adopt two puppies from the same litter. They will bond more with each other than with you.
  3. Sex doesn’t matter as much as temperament.
  4. Age does matter. If you have an older, arthritic dog at home, do it a favor and don’t get a rambunctious puppy. It won’t make the older dog young again; it will just make the senior years more challenging.
  5. Let the two dogs be introduced to each other before you make any decisions on adoption. Try to find a dog trainer or canine behaviorist to come along to observe the interaction.
When the dogs meet for the first time, this is what to look for:
  1. Does one dog charge the other? Or does one dog try to chase the other dog? Don’t let it happen.
  2. Does one dog try to avoid eye contact? This is called shying away which is an indication of stress.
  3. If you are considering a smaller breed make sure you put the dog on your lap and call your other dog toward you. If the smaller dog growls or lunges, this is called lap-guarding and can often lead to other guarding issues. This is a behavior that needs to be managed.
